Day Trips
Visiting Egmont National Park from Hawera
Everything you need to plan your visit to Mt Taranaki — just 45 minutes from Hawera.
Mt Taranaki — or Egmont — is one of New Zealand's most iconic peaks. Its near-perfect cone shape rises 2,518 metres above the South Taranaki plains, visible from much of the region on clear days. From Hawera, it's a 45-minute drive to the national park boundary, making it an easy and rewarding day trip.
Getting There from Hawera
The most direct route from Hawera takes you via Kaponga and Stratford to the Dawson Falls visitor centre on the southern side of the mountain. The drive is about 45 minutes and follows increasingly spectacular mountain roads as you rise through farmland into native bush.
Alternatively, drive north to Egmont Village (about 55 minutes) to access the North Egmont visitor centre, which has more walk options and the classic mountain views.
Top Walks in Egmont National Park
Wilkies Pools (45 min return) — A family favourite from the Dawson Falls car park. Easy bush walk through beautiful native forest to natural plunge pools and a waterfall. Suitable for all fitness levels and ages.
Veronica Loop (3 hours return) — A moderate loop from North Egmont that takes you above the bush line for sweeping views of the coast and Taranaki plains. Popular and well-marked.
Pouakai Circuit (2 days) — The classic multi-day tramp. Takes you around the lower slopes with stunning views and the famous Pouakai Tarn reflection. DOC huts available.
Summit Climb (8–10 hours return) — For experienced, well-equipped hikers only. The summit is technical in places and conditions change rapidly. Do not attempt without proper gear and a good weather window.
Best Time to Visit
Summer (December–March) offers the most reliable weather, but Mt Taranaki can be visited year-round. The mountain creates its own weather — morning cloud often clears by midday. Always check the DOC forecast and conditions report before heading up. Spring can bring snow to the upper slopes even when it's warm in Hawera.
What to Bring

- ✓ Good walking shoes or boots (trail shoes at minimum)
- ✓ Water and food — limited facilities on the mountain
- ✓ Sunscreen and sunglasses — UV is strong at altitude
